Recently, Miami Design Preservation League’s audio tour was named “Best Value on Ocean Drive” by the Best of Miami edition of the Miami New Times and there is a good reason. Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) offers several different tours, which explore some of the world’s most fascinating architecture. The best way to understand and appreciate the buildings of the Art Deco District is to view them at close-range. MDPL offers a number of opportunities to experience the structures in context, and to learn more about the history of the City of Miami Beach, the history of the Miami Design Preservation League, and the buildings themselves. MDPL’s tour differs from other Art Deco walking tours because MDPL contributed to the preservation of the district and continues to protect and promote the district through educational programming and advocacy work. Plus, when you buy tickets for an MDPL walking tour, you can feel good that your money supports the organization that led the preservation efforts to preserve, protect, and promote the cultural, social, economic and environmental integrity of the Miami Beach Art Deco District and throughout South Florida.
Conducted by local historians, architects, and trained guides, these tours provide an introduction to the Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival styles found throughout the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. “Our mission is to educate people about the history and architecture of Miami Beach. Our volunteer tour guides are passionate about our mission, Miami Beach, and the unique architecture found here. We are lucky to have the best tour guides in the city,” states MDPL’s Marketing Director, Amanda Bush. MDPL does have a long roster of highly educated and extremely passionate tour guides. Some who have been part of MDPL since 1976 when Barbara Baer Capitman and Leonard Horowitz first founded MDPL and started their fight to preserve the Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach. MDPL also provides an Art Deco and MiMo Tour Guide Academy twice a year for the purpose of educating their tour guides and other interested Art Deco aficionadas in the area.
The official Art Deco Guided Walking tour is available daily at 10:30am and departs from the Art Deco Welcome Center at 1001 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, except Thursday when it departs at 6:30pm.
