ABOUT MDPL

Construction Progress

MORE

As a part of the City of Miami Beach’s Planned Progress program of capital improvements, the 10th Street Auditorium complex is being completely renovated. A key element of the plan, developed by Todd Tragash of STA Architects, will be to separate the original Beach Patrol Headquarters building (Robert Taylor, 1934) from the Oceanfront Auditorium (Leonard Glasser, 1954). The MiMo facade along Ocean Drive will be maintained, with a state-of-the-art new building going up behind, that will open up pedestrian access along the beach walk between the two structures. The new project will feature additional facilities for the Beach Patrol, as well as expanded office, storage, retail, educational, and exhibition space for MDPL.

During the construction period, MDPL is operating from two different locations. The Art Deco Gift Shop will maintain its Ocean Drive address, moving two blocks north to 1200 Ocean Dr. (The store entrance is located on 12th Street, midway between Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue.)

The administrative office will move to Historic City Hall, 1140 Washington Av. Due to the scheduling of final permitting for Historic City Hall, administrative staff will be working through the summer in a temporary location at the Barclay Plaza hotel, located at 1940 Park Avenue in the Collins Park neighborhood. Current phone numbers for both the Gift Shop and administrative office will remain the same.

When construction is complete, the new Art Deco Welcome Center will serve as a central Welcome Center for visitors and residents, offering tourist information, educational/interpretive activities in the new museum/gallery space, expanded offerings in the Art Deco Gift Shop, and a full series of lectures, films, and other events in conjunction with other Miami Beach cultural and historical institutions.

While we don't have a "construction cam" available, we do have photographs of the project, taken from the northwest and northeast corners, on a weekly interval.
