What does Art Deco sound like? Find out with our series of free concerts celebrating music of the period. We've got a lineup of outstanding musicians performing jazz, blues, swing, Latin jazz, and more. All concerts take place on the stage at 13th Street and Ocean Drive.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 12
3 & 4 pm
Peter Betan kicks off our Art Deco Weekend music program with classical jazz guitar and period pieces from Art Deco's heyday. Peter, a South Florida-based singer, songwriter, and acoustic guitarist, has opened for many acclaimed artists including Bob Dylan, the Neville brothers, and Richie Havens.
6:30, 7:30 & 8:30 pm
Yoko Noge & the Jazz Me Blues Band revitalizes classic blues and mainstream jazz with its unique blend of Osaka and Chicago cultures. Based in Chicago, the band was founded in 1987 by Yoko Noge (from Osaka, Japan) and Clark Dean. The group performs nationally and internationally, and has released five CDs.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 13
2 & 3 pm
One of country's top acoustic guitarists, Michael Marc Zanabili is known for his blend of classical, jazz, and Latin influences. For Art Deco Weekend, he'll be exploring the Latin aspect of Art Deco, playing classics from the 1930s and 40s.
4, 5 & 6 pm
Join Sheba, Beverly Barkley, and Sack Full of Dreams for swing and more from the Cotton Club era. Sheba, a.k.a. "The Mississippi Queen," travels throughout the South singing the blues. Beverly is a versatile jazz vocalist and a regular on the South Florida scene, who's performed with many notable musicians. Howard Moss and his bank Sack Full of Dreams accompany the vocalists.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 14
1 & 2 pm
Piano Bob performs his virtuoso combination of boogie woogie, New Orleans, and jump swing blues all over South Florida, including regular gigs in Miami. He calls the blues "one of the most honest forms of expression." Come judge for yourself.
3, 4 & 5 pm
Wendy Pederson's mix of high energy blues and sensual jazz has made her a South Florida favorite. Her Art Deco Weekend performance, titled "The Steamy Side of Cole Porter," is sure to be a hit. Wendy's awards include being named the Southern Bell Pace jazz artist of the year and the best female rock vocalist by the Miami New Times. A sought-after studio background vocalist, her credits include Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, and James Brown.
