| IMAGES FROM — AND OF — SHANGHAI Three exhibitions on view during Art Deco Weekend and beyond feature the work of artists and photographers from Shanghai. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see these works, some of which were created specifically for Art Deco Weekend and the Miami-Shanghai Architecture and Design Project. Art Deco Architecture in Shanghai Shanghai Sanya Culture Communication & Exhibition Company, Ltd. Art Deco Welcome Center Shanghai has the largest concentration of Art Deco architecture of any city in East Asia, with 165 sites constructed between the two World Wars, most located in the former Public Concession and the former French Concession. Art Deco architecture in Shanghai includes all types of buildings — offices, banks, shops, schools, houses, apartments, villas, cinemas, ballrooms, hotels, museums, gymnasiums, and monuments. This exhibition, organized specifically for Art Deco Weekend, puts on view photographs of a large selection of Shanghai’s Art Deco buildings. On view during Art Deco Weekend and throughout the month at the Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach. Admission is free. Shanghai Modern Paintings by Lu Zhide Miami Beach Botanical Garden Shanghai painter Lu Zhide’s Shanghai Modern is a new series of 30 works exploring the lifestyle of Shanghai women in the 1930s. The paintings combine traditional Chinese ink and wash painting techniques with western techniques. Lu Zhide is wellknown in China and his work has been exhibited and collected by museums internationally; countries he’s exhibited in include the US, Austria, Germany, and Japan. On view beginning January 11 at Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach. Admission is free. Art Deco From Shanghai to Miami Beach Photographs by Deke Erh Goldman Properties Warehouse This photography exhibition documents the Art Deco of Shanghai and Miami Beach in 100 photographs (50 from each city) and will be exhibited both in Miami Beach and Shanghai, as part of the effort to build connections between the two cities. Deke Erh began his career as a journalist and editor before becoming the first freelance photographer in China. He has published more than 15 volumes, many with his collaborator Tess Johnston, including the just-published Shanghai Art Deco. He is the recipient of numerous awards, and is known both for his architectural photography and for the scholarly and historical nature of his work, which often explores a region in depth.
